3 Signs of Perimenopause and Suggested Home Remedies
There are a lot of signs of perimenopause, but did you know that there are alternative methods you could take to relieve them? Perimenopause remedies – home treatments – are not only available online, but can also be found in your kitchen or garden.
There are 3 major symptoms of perimenopause that we will discuss in detail here, together with some suggested home treatments that have been tried-and-tested by most women; some are even decades and centuries old already:
1. Insomnia caused by hot flashes or flushes with matching night sweats.
Perimenopause insomnia is usually a symptom that has been well-complained by women. This is usually precipitated by a series of events: A sudden rush of heat from the chest to the head, sometimes even up to your torso (the hot flash or flush) can cause very heavy (but brief) sweating due to a change of body temperature. (When the body detects heat, it tries to temper and cool it down by sweating.) This usually happens at night. Since the body’s rest has been disturbed, insomnia occurs – for just a few minutes, if you’re lucky. But some cannot get back to sleep for hours on end.
A good way to manage these symptoms would be to avoid eating spicy or hot foods. Also avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine, especially in the hours prior to sleeping. Include soy and vitamin E in your diet.
Primrose oil, ginseng, dong quai and flax seed oil are just some of the herbs that you can take to manage hot flashes. Licorice is known for its ability to counteract the effects of night sweats. Take chamomile or peppermint tea as these two have a calming and sedative effect.
Sleep in a well-ventilated room to reduce the risk of triggering night sweats. Try to relax, don’t get too stressed out as it may also be a possible contributor to bad sleeping habits.
2. Changes in the menstrual cycle.
Periods become irregular – having shorter or longer periods than usual. Sometimes, the menstrual flow also fluctuates between heavy to very light. You may even skip periods, or you may have too many periods in a month. These irregularities would usually have the same effect on you the way that PMS (or pre-menstrual syndrome) does – it may be painful at times, and will be irritating.
Black cohosh is known as a woman’s herb, and is very effective in regulating the menses and relieving pain due to an irregular period. (Be wary though, that this is only recommended for short term use.) Flax seed oil should be non-filtered and unrefined. This helps in preventing excessive bleeding.
Green tea also manages and helps the menstrual cycle, with the added benefit of being an antioxidant which is believed to reduce your risk of certain cancers. Ginger tea and liferoot gives relief to menstrual pains by relieving menstrual cramps (usually due to excessive bleeding).
3. Vaginal dryness and irritation.
Most women complain that they do not enjoy sex anymore because sex has become painful and uncomfortable. This is because of vaginal dryness resulting from hormone imbalance. Estrogen keeps the vaginal walls moisturized; the lack of it keeps it dry. So naturally, when you have sex, it would hurt since the vagina is not well lubricated.
Always take lots of water as it keeps you hydrated. Aloe gel can be applied nightly to relieve dryness. Natural progesterone cream has been said to promote and increased libido. Black cohosh, chamomile and peppermint relieve vaginal dryness and irritation. Water-based vaginal lubricants or creams can also be used.
There is no way to tell when perimenopause starts or ends. And unfortunately for the woman, passing through this stage is inevitable. So keep yourself informed as all times – just in case you experience these symptoms, you’ll know what to do.
