5 Perimenopause Treatment Herbs
We know what perimenopause is. We know it is caused by a female hormone imbalance, specific to 2 particular hormones (estrogen and progesterone). We know that perimenopause – natural phase as it may be to a woman’s body – is manifest through numerous changes in the body that is commonly known as symptoms. These symptoms may or may not include the following:
-
Irregular menstrual periods.
-
Hot flashes.
-
Night sweats.
-
Weight gain, specifically in the midsection.
-
Vaginal dryness, leading to vaginal pain and loss of libido.
-
Moos swings and possible depression.
-
Short term memory loss.
We also know that there are conventional medicines to help alleviate the pains and discomforts of some of the symptoms – and that there is no “cure” for perimenopause since it is a natural process that every woman will eventually have to face. But there are certain herbs that can manage the symptoms. The ones most commonly used are:
-
Black cohosh. Known as “the woman’s herb”, this is said to have the isoflavone formononetin which mimics hormone activity. It lightens the menstrual flow and can relieve menstrual pains too. Recommended for short term use only (6 months, tops). Relief from hot flashes, vaginal dryness, weight gain (due to bloating and water retention), headaches, and also minimizes heart palpitations.
-
Flax seed or linseed oil. This is rich in essential fatty acids (specifically omega-3 and omega-6). Good for the heart and brings relief to almost all of the symptoms of perimenopause.
-
Dong quai. Considered to be “the female ginseng”, for the Chinese, this means “proper order”. Literally taken, this herb restores balance and order in a person’s body. It has been taken by the Chinese for centuries to regulate the menstrual period and to relieve painful menstrual cramps. Also relieves hot flashes, lessens night sweats, and tames mood swings.
-
Phytoestrogens, specifically soy products. This isn’t actually and herb, but a regular intake of soy products are said to be effective in reducing hot flashes. Tofu, soy milk, soy nuts, tempeh and miso are just some of the soy-based foods that are rich in phytoestrogens (weak but effective estrogen-like compounds found in plants).
-
Ginseng, specifically Panax Ginseng. A Chinese herb used for the relief of hot flashes, and the lessening of occurrences of most perimenopause symptoms. Also helps with symptoms of fatigue (which are possible symptoms of perimenopause as well) and with short term memory loss and cognitive problems.
Herbs are also considered by many as medicine. And as with any medicine, it is best to consult with your doctor or an accredited naturalist doctor for the proper use of the herbs.
