Alternative Herbal Treatments for Perimenopause Night Sweats

Perspiration in the middle of the night, for no apparent reason? Perimenopause nigh sweats can be annoyingly disruptive. Try these time-tested alternative herbal treatments:

- Licorice (Also known as Gan-cao).

Licorice is not just found in antiperspirants – it is also used to normalize hormone production and to treat infertility problems.

Chinese herbalists distilled the root (reportedly by keeping the root dry and storing it, to be sliced or ground for future use) to prescribe it for a variety of medical conditions. Some women have attested to the wonderful relieving properties of licorice when it comes to perimenopausal night sweats.

It is also being made into confectionery licorice, specifically candied. The candies will not help your symptoms: the herb in its natural form – particularly the root extract – will.

A word of caution though: this should not be taken by people suffering from high blood pressure as large and repeated doses of this may lead to possible acute hypertension, diabetes or heart problems. It  may also lower potassium levels and cause water retention due to excessive use.

This should be taken not less than an hour before bedtime, since the tea’s steam may contribute to the sweats as well.

Did you know? Licorice has been shown to be of help to animals who have liver damage due to its detoxifying properties. Also, this helps in having a soothing effect to the lungs, which makes quitting the smokes much easier.

- Dong quai (Also known as Chinese Angelica, and Dang-gui)

This herb is said to be helpful in lessening night sweats.

Did you know? No, this isn’t a type of herb. But another plant can also help with your night sweats. Cotton. Wear cotton clothes as these allow air to go through faster to cool your body down. If your budget permits it, have cotton sheets and blankets in handy as well.
