Female Hormone Imbalance – Unconventional Treatments that Relaxes

For the uninformed, perimenopause symptoms may seem to be scary, especially if you have a family history of a smattering of illnesses and diseases specific to a particular family. For most of the women I know, their primary concern was that they might have cancer. Doesn’t matter what type, as long as the big C is mentioned, it never fails to send shivers down anyone’s spine – men and women alike.

Most women were in the dark about this before the recent surge of topics on perimenopause. We – yes, me included – just thought then that since we were having erratic, irregular menstrual cycles (the first and obvious sign, which actually gives a bad fright when you’re not hoping for any more kids and you’re delayed for some time.), that automatically, something was wrong with our bodies. Some don’t go to the doctor for fear of what tests may yield. Some bravely confront their doctors in the hopes of learning that it is anything but a dangerous disease.

And most of the time, it’s just this change we call perimenopause. So we are bombarded with information about how to treat symptoms (because we can only manage the symptoms, not cure it, since perimenopause is not a disease). Conventional treatments such as hormone replacement therapies, transdermal estrogen patches, and low-dose birth control pills are suggested to regulate periods.

But would it interest you to know that there are some treatments that make you feel and look good at the same time? Sometimes, the main trigger why we experience perimenopause symptoms would be stress.

So here are some of the unconventional treatments that you (and even non-perimenopausal women) can enjoy:

Aromatherapy. Certain scents are mood relaxants. All you need for this would be an oil burner or diffuser and put it in a place where you can rest your senses and your mind from the ills of the world. Usually, you can put it in a bathroom (especially if you have a tub where you can have a relaxing soak) or in a bedroom. Stock up on oils such as lavender, chamomile, geranium and peppermint (for pain relief); orange (for nausea); rosemary (if you need an energy boost); and clary sage (one of the few herbs known for its ability to mimic estrogen – reduces wrinkles, lessens mood swings and anxiety attacks.)

Reflexology. Also called zone therapy, it is the art of applying pressure through massaging, squeezing or pushing hard on parts of the feet, hands, and sometimes, even the ears. It rebalances hormone levels, and women who use this attest to the fact that they feel so relaxed after a session that they totally forget why they went there in the first place.

So don’t be afraid of perimenopause; use it as an excuse to try something new. Pamper yourself and feel good.
