Foods to Include in a Perimenopause Diet

With so many perimenopause busters, medicines and supplements out in the market today, one tends to think – do these products really eliminate the signs of perimenopause? Maybe it does, but to ensure that whatever you are taking works on whatever the dastardly symptom is, you must first improve your lifestyle by changing some things. And a healthy diet is usually the first one to feel the change.

More than 85% of perimenopausal and menopausal women experience symptoms due to an unhealthy diet. So it is safe to say that your diet will help lessen your discomfort in these trying times. “Eating rich” means you have a high carbohydrate-high protein-high everything diet – not a very good sign because you may probably be experiencing more discomfort than ever due to perimenopause symptoms – hot flashes, night sweats, and perimenopause insomnia are just some of them.

You should have the following foods for your diet:

  • Fish.
  • Olive oil or corn oil.
  • Vegetables – lettuce, peas, asparagus and cucumbers to name a few.
  • Fiber – whole-grain breads, muesli, rice, wheat bran and oatmeal.
  • Fruits – apples, grapes, prunes, peaches, and pears.
  • Meat that is steamed, broiled, microwaved, broiled, baked, poached and/or grilled (these processes help eliminate the fat-oil content within the meat).
  • Soy products – tofu, tempeh, miso, soy milk, etc.
  • Honey.
  • Flax seed/flax oil.
  • Lamb (a good source of Vitamin E).
  • Garlic.
  • Liver.
  • Complex carbohydrates – such as whole wheat and rye.
  • Chicken without the skin. (The leanest part of the chicken is always the best; that’s usually the chicken breast.)
  • Nuts.
  • Water – plenty of it.
  • Salt (but not too much to avoid water retention and bloating).
  • Low-fat dairy products such as yogurt, skimmed milk, cheese, etc.

Have a little of each, but never too much of just one type. Eat a balanced meal to better enhance the quality of the life you live – perimenopausal or not.
