HRT Treatment & BHRT Treatment (Conventional Perimenopause Treatments continued)

In a study conducted on healthy, post-menopausal women, it was learned that estrogen + progestin therapy had certain benefits (less cases of colon cancer and hip fractures), but carried more risks (such as an increased threat of coronary heart disease, blood clots, strokes, pulmonary embolism, and breast cancer). However, women with premature ovarian failure are not exposed to the same risks, and this treatment is much more beneficial to them.

Very few medical practitioners prescribe HRT to women with even the slightest hint of a family history of breast cancer, as HRT, in several studies, has been shown to contain elements that may possibly trigger the illness (since most cancers are usually genetic). In case you need to stop taking HRT, it has to be done gradually. Why? Well, because abruptly stopping this treatment will cause your hormone levels to drop dramatically and will make you “age ungracefully” – sagging skin, bags, and wrinkles are possible effects. Would you like to look like you’re past menopause when you aren’t even finished with the peri part yet?

A doctor will evaluate your medical history to see if you are a good candidate for HRT. Once prescribed, you will be given very low doses so as not to suddenly upset the balance of your body’s hormones. It is wise to talk to your doctor about its pros and cons before conceding to said treatment.

  • Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). As opposed to HRT and synthetic hormones, Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy uses naturally occurring hormones (estrogen, progesterone and/or testosterone, whatever is needed) derived from natural sources, usually plants.

Proponents claim that there are less side effects with BHRT when compared to HRT, since these natural hormones are very similar to those that our bodies produce. These are readily available in cream and/or gel form. This allows for easy absorption through the skin and is said to have even fewer side effects as opposed to its counterpart, HRT.

Caution should still be observed though; as of the moment, there aren’t a lot of clinical tests done to validate the safety and efficacy of BHRT and there are no known long-term studies that supports its claim of being safer than traditional HRT. As with synthetic HRTs, extreme caution must be made in taking BHRTs (also known as NHRT – Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy), especially if you have breast cancer or if you have the said medical condition running in the family. If you have to try it, make sure to use the lowest effective dose for you.
