Introduction to Perimenopause Treatments
Sheila (not her real name) is scared of doctors. She has been to a lot of them, and feels that not one was patient enough to listen to her story. They made her try a lot of medications that didn’t work. When she complained, they said she was just being biased and paranoid. She felt that she was already in perimenopause – unfortunately, no one believed her. So when one doctor made her go through some tests and tried to give her treatment, naturally the poor girl was tormented with fear of being given the wrong medicine again.
She is not alone in her predicament. A lot of women are actually scared of a doctor’s tests, let alone when there are suggested treatments. But happily for us, there are a lot of doctors nowadays who are now becoming aware of perimenopause and that the scare is real. There are some who are now more than willing to listen to you describing the symptoms.
Now if your doctor tells you that you may have perimenopause, take heart. It’s not the end of the world. Like menopause, this is a normal phenomenon. In other words, it is inevitable – you will definitely have to pass through this stage whether you like it or not. The symptoms will be your indicators.
Whatever kind of treatment you decide on, your doctor will base it on your age, overall health, medical history, allergies and tolerance to specific medicines, and current symptoms. Most importantly though, you and your doctor should reach a halfway point where you will be comfortable with what he thinks will be right for you. The fact that your doctor made you go through tests to rule out other conditions means you are blessed to have finally found someone willing to listen.
Before you get to the groaning-in-pain phase though (which often just happens because of certain symptoms), keep in mind that there are things you can do to alleviate your symptoms. We have 3 types:
1. Conventional treatments.
2. Alternative prescription medication.
3. Alternative treatments.
All three aim to create at least a semblance of hormonal balance.
