Introduction to the Signs & Symptoms of Perimenopause: Irregular Menstrual Period
After years of a routinely perfect, hassle-free existence, Amanda is now amazed and puzzled at how much she has changed – unfortunately not for the better.
Her once happy smiles have been replaced by incessant frowns due to mood swings and irritation (from even the smallest of faults). She often experiences sleepless nights. Now, she is more worried because of an erratic period – sometimes it comes on time, sometimes it doesn’t at all! The latter increases her stress, because of her thinking that a missed period may signal a pregnancy.
She is not alone. A lot of women are experiencing perimenopause, but many just choose to take no notice of it. It may be because they feel that it is normal or they may just be holding true to the adage that “ignorance is bliss”.
More often than not though, most women are scared to know what’s happening to them, that they may have an illness that they would rather not know about.
To rule out any other possible causes for your symptoms, you must always consult with your doctor. Once any medical affliction is ruled out, then it may be safe to say that you are experiencing perimenopause – which is actually normal for a woman nearing or in their 40s.
The symptoms vary from woman to woman, but there are some of common signs usually complained about by someone going through perimenopause:
An Irregular Menstrual Period
A woman’s monthly periods are regulated by her hormones. When a period is missed, she will often worry and believe herself to be pregnant – until her period begins.
Now, when you are in perimenopause, your periods may become erratic. You can be quite regular for a couple of months, then suddenly stop for a long period of time. Sometimes, you may have a period when you’re supposed to and then have another one less than two weeks later.
Menstrual flow can also range from very heavy (that you feel like you’re bleeding from the inside out), to moderate (like your normal period), or to a light trickle (which may lead you to think that you just have “white” menses).
The duration can also be unpredictable – it may be shorter or longer than your usual period. There may also be spotting in between your periods.
