Less-Common Yet More Alarming Perimenopause Symptoms (Libido Problems & Other Overlooked, Less-Common Symptoms continued)
- Hair loss (or increase in facial hair). This may be the only perimenopause symptom that is not caused by another symptom – but it still happens because of a woman’s hormone imbalance.
Alopecia (medical term for hair loss) happens because of an imbalance between estrogen (decrease of it) and testosterone (excess of it). And yes, women do have testosterone as well. This leads to hair loss on the head and increased hair growth in parts where we don’t want them growing.
- Changes in body (and sometimes breath) odor. There are a few cases of this, so the likelihood of this happening is very minimal. However, it does happen as each case is different from woman to woman, so it’s best that this be discussed as well.
Perspiration in itself doesn’t have any odor; rather it is often a tool for the body to detoxify and release waste materials via skin. The toxins from the sweat glands are attacked by bacteria; hence, causing an unappealing smell.
A deficiency of magnesium and zinc are also possible suspects of body odor. Some foods are also culprits (such as onions, garlic, spices, curry and alcohol). Cigarette smoking can also be a contributor to body odor.
But not all body odors are due to hormonal imbalance. Some may be caused by medical conditions like low blood sugar, diabetes, parasites, metabolic dysfunction (obesity, hyperthyroidism, Addison’s disease, goiter, or Graves’ disease among them), and in extremely rare cases even stress. Consult a doctor when you suspect that something other than food or stress are triggering the change in your body odor.
- Tinnitus (a buzzing sound in the ears). This can contribute to perimenopause dizziness, too. A ringing or a whooshing in the ear continues until a light- headed state is experienced. Tinnitus in itself can be tolerated, but if combined with other symptoms (a headache, a sleepless night or the occurrence of a menstrual period, for example), it can be painful.
- Tingling in the extremities (arms, hands, legs, and feet). This may be a sign of dehydration and/or vitamin B deficiency, specifically vitamin B12 deficiency. Tummy problems are usually suspect, particularly if you have a bad case of diarrhea. But this may also be a symptom of diabetes so it’s good to consult your doctor to rule out any possible conditions.
