Libido Problems & Other Overlooked, Less-Common Symptoms

Quite annoyingly, libido problems is yet another of the perimenopause symptoms. Still attributed to hormone imbalance (which isn’t?), perimenopausal women may experience two types of libido problems:

  • Increase of libido. This is very, very, very rare (as most women will attest to), but it sometimes happens. If this turns out to be you, then congratulations! However, sometimes the problem lies with your partner, not you. It will also be good to check if your partner is the one who is losing his sex drive, making you think that you have an insatiable one.

  • Decrease of libido. This is the common complaint of perimenopausal women (and their spouses). Psychological feelings of guilt sometimes come out as some of these women consider sex as “by appointment only”. Gone were the days when you were the one initiating the deed. But more often than not, physical problems lead to a lack of interest, vaginal dryness and irritation being the major culprits.

Vaginal Dryness

The decline of estrogen production, medical conditions (which should be checked out by a doctor to rule out any possible pre-existing illnesses), and emotional stress and issues are the likely reasons for decreased lubrication. Vaginal dryness makes for uncomfortable and painful intercourse. This is why perimenopausal woman may reject sex or anything even remotely related to it.

Actually, a woman’s sex drive only becomes a problem when her partner is on a different plane – his sexual desire is increased when yours just hit the bottom, or vice versa. If you are growing old together, then hopefully, it is possible that you also have the same feelings when it comes to sex. The best solution is for you and your partner to sit down and talk about it.

Other Overlooked and Less-Common Symptoms

There are symptoms that, upon first glance, may not seem to be related to perimenopause. If they occur by themselves, they would most definitely not be treated as a symptom. Combined with other symptoms though, it actually makes sense to consider perimenopause. Check to see if you have them too.

- Irregular, fast heartbeat and/or heart palpitations. A hormone imbalance may be a possible cause of these. But there are other medical conditions that cause irregular heart beats. So if you have them, don’t take it lightly. To rule out any possible illness related to the heart, please see a doctor or a cardiologist who will make you go through some tests just to be on the safe side.

- Itchy, crawly skin. When the estrogen levels drop, so does collagen production. The effects of loss of collagen usually manifest itself through dry, itchy skin.

As with heart palpitations, having itchy skin doesn’t necessarily mean that you are automatically in perimenopause. A lot of things can contribute to skin problems such as the constant weather changes.

- Breast tenderness. This would come as no surprise to some women as they experience this before, during or after a period. The breast tends to feel heavy, and the slightest touch usually causes pain. This is an indicator of estrogen dominance, a sure sign of hormone imbalance.

Still, most women still assume that any “off” feeling that’s connected to the breast still leads to breast cancer. In reality, that is rarely the case. But it doesn’t hurt to be safe. Consult your doctor about your breast discomforts to alleviate your fears.
