- Cold Water
The next time you experience a hot flush, try drinking cold water. It cools you down and lowers your body temperature to an acceptable one.
- Dong quai (Also known as Chinese Angelica, and Dang-gui).
This is said to be a reliever for hot flashes as well.
- Damiana
This reduces hot flashes as well. (See description under Vaginal dryness and loss of libido.)
- Natural progesterone skin cream
Natural progesterone skin cream helps in managing the balance of one’s hormone levels, usually without side effects. This also has the added bonus of burning body fat, wrinkle remover (better than Botox, as some enthusiasts claim), and gives better looking skin.
Applied topically, this skin cream should be at 2 percent – nothing more, nothing less. ¼ of a teaspoon should be applied to skin daily. It has also been recommended that you should have a “rest” period of three days to a week off in a month for the skin not to develop a tolerance to the cream, thus rendering it ineffective. Apply the cream preferably before bedtime.
Before using this though, have yourself tested if you are estrogen dominant or deficient as this product may cause adverse effects depending on what your deficiency is.
- Wild yam (Also known as colic root, Devil’s bones, Yuma, and rheumatism root).
A lot of women claim that this is effective in relieving discomfort due to hot flashes by lessening its occurrences. An additional benefit would be its beta carotene content, an antioxidant which lowers cholesterol levels.
- Rhubarb
We’ve heard of rhubarb pies, but did you know that this can also be an effective remedy for hot flashes? A study made in Germany showed that an extract made from rhubarb was a safe for hot flashes. Unfortunately, the said extract (known as Err 731) is not yet available in the US.
If you are growing rhubarb in your garden, don’t go harvesting just yet. Its leaves are not edible, and some are even considered poisonous. So as of the moment, don’t experiment and be very, very careful. (I decided to include this piece of information in so that when this extract becomes available in the market, you will already know of its benefits.)
- Chasteberry (or Vitex)
This is a known hormone-balancer, as it helps the body increase its production of progesterone. It is also very effective in reducing hot flashes, among other perimenopause symptoms. This should not be taken if you are taking oral contraceptives for birth control as it may meddle with the contraceptive’s efficacy.
If rashes, headaches, anxiety attacks or nausea manifests, discontinue use as you may be having an allergic reaction to the herb. Consult your doctor (or preferably a naturopathic physician) should you still want to take it.
Recommended dosage: 400 mg daily.
