More Overlooked Perimenopause Symptoms (Libido Problems & Other Overlooked, Less-Common Symptoms continued)

- Headaches that range from mild to severe. Hormone imbalance is not the only cause of headaches, but it shouldn’t be discounted too.

For perimenopausal women, this is a sure indicator of the stage, combined with other symptoms that contribute to it (which includes PMS due to an irregular and painful period or an insomnia-filled night). Other factors may include stress, emotions (anger, anxiety, and depression amongst them), skipping meals (when you are used to a 3-meal-a-day diet), excess or lack of sleep, environmental factors (like noise), and alcohol/caffeine consumption. Migraine-like headaches can also occur due to foods like chocolate, cheese and some smoked food.

- Urinary incontinence. This occurs when there is an involuntary passing of urine.

There are two types. First, stress incontinence is where you pass some urine when you sneeze, cough or even laugh. Second, urge incontinence which comes without warning; anything, like a running faucet can set it off at any time. In any case, the main cause is usually the loss of estrogen and the high production of progesterone.

Wonderful estrogen (which makes us women look like hell when we have a deficiency of it) takes care of the walls of the urethra and bladder and also manages the flow of urine. Progesterone on the other hand, acts as a diuretic when there is an excess, and causes frequent urination. Incontinence isn’t just confined to perimenopause; it may also be a symptom of diabetes. So have a full check-up with your doctor before declaring that your incontinence is due to age.

- Gastrointestinal disorders. Gas, diarrhea every now and then, acid reflux, heartburn, flatulence and indigestion are just some of the discomforts classified under gastrointestinal disorders. Some women barely notice these as symptoms unless very severe digestive pains occur. In perimenopause, gas problems usually become evident before or during a woman’s menstrual cycle.

As always, the best course of action is to consult a doctor or an endocrinologist first to find out if the pains are not the cause of any underlying illnesses.

- Allergic reactions. Food allergies and asthma are at the top of this list. Sometimes, a perimenopausal woman with a history of allergy develops an increased sensitivity to certain types of food (dairies, wheat, peanuts, and sometimes even alcohol and caffeine) and environmental allergens (pollens, dust, perfumes and the like). These can lead to asthma (if you had it in your early years) and other respiratory problems, so this should be checked by a doctor.

- Fatigue. Perimenopausal women unusually feel very tired and suffer from fatigue after an activity that previously wouldn’t cause them to feel such.

Lack or disrupted sleep is a common cause of this (due to perimenopause insomnia). Poor diet also contributes to this – especially for those who diet-now-then-binge-then-diet-again. And being a little lazy is also a factor.

- Dizziness or light-headedness. Dizziness is usually a direct cause of a hormone imbalance, but may also be caused by a host of other circumstances.

Other possible causes include skipped meals, tired eyes (i.e. watching TV for more than 10 hours a day, non-stop), too much caffeine, taking medicine (for medical treatment), little or no exercise and stress.
