More Pleasant Alternative Therapies for Perimenopause
Apart from herbal remedies, there are other alternative therapies that have been used for perimenopause. These other therapies are usually done by naturopathic and holistic practitioners. These are quick mood improvers and relaxants commonly using the senses of touch and smell.
Aromatherapy. Certain scents may be able to help decrease the effects of a stressful day. Simply get an oil burner or diffuser and situate one in a stress-free place (possibly a bathroom or your bedroom). You can also put in a few drops in a warm, hot bath (inhaling it and allows the oil to directly enter the bloodstream in a non-invasive way). The scent is a relaxant and stabilizes moods.
Must-have-at-home scents: clary sage (an estrogenic herb that reduces wrinkles, lessens mood swings, eliminates anxiety and may even act as an aphrodisiac to increase libido), lavender, chamomile, geranium, peppermint (for relief from pain), orange (or any other citrusy scent for nausea), and rosemary (for energy).
Acupuncture. Have you seen TV shows that have this guy being attacked by a Chinese guy with a pack of needles? Well, that attack is a good one: it’s called acupuncture – a traditional Chinese way of “waking up” specific bodily functions via puncturing the epidermis with a needle.
And scary as it may look, it actually works! A study has shown that if done right (and done by a licensed acupuncturist), acupuncture may be beneficial and effective in changing the production levels of three particular hormones: estrogen, FSH, and LH.
Reflexology. This is the art of applying pressure through massaging, squeezing or pushing hard on parts of the feet or hands, sometimes even the ears. This is also called zone therapy. It works like acupuncture via pressure points. This re-balances hormones so it is very well received by women who are into alternative medicine.
Again, the remedies and alternatives have been laid out for you. As is obvious, each type still contains certain risks. Weigh those risks and consult your doctor to find out which would work best for you. Combining treatments and the way you live your life daily should complement each other … which is exactly what we’ll talk about in the next chapter: lifestyle issues.
