HRT Treatment & BHRT Treatment (Conventional Perimenopause Treatments continued)

  • Endometrial Ablation. This minor surgical procedure may provide some relief if you experience heavy bleeding. In this procedure, the endometrium’s (uterus) inner lining is destroyed and damaged by fiber-optic laser instruments or electrical energy or heat. The said inner lining is the one responsible for the menses. This either lightens the flow of menses or eliminates menstruation completely, resulting to possible early menopause. (Most women who go through this procedure experience the former.)

  • Transdermal Patch. This is basically estradiol (the main estrogen produced by women; also called 17-beta estradiol and E2) in patch (or plaster) form. This is also said to be effective in lessening hot flashes.

  • Antidepressants. As the name suggests, these medicines are meant to relieve  depression. These are only prescribed by the doctor in cases of severe, chronic depression.

  • Pain-killers. This will only be prescribed on very rare cases, only when the patient is unable to take the pain caused by irregular bleeding or other perimenopause symptoms.

  • Hysterectomy. When all else fails, you may opt for surgery via hysterectomy. This is the surgical and total removal of the uterus to stop heavy irregular bleeding. This is advised and only considered if all the treatments mentioned above cannot give even the slightest relief.

Some changes in your lifestyle may also be recommended by your doctor for the treatments to work. Regular exercise may be suggested to further improve the body’s blood circulation. Other vitamins and dietary nutrients may be a must for you to take (like vitamin E, soy and flax).

Before taking any of these, tell your doctor if you are on other prescription (or even non-prescription) medicine, vitamins and other nutritional (or herbal) supplements. This is so you can be monitored for possible side effects. Explain all of your symptoms so that they can be given proper attention by your doctor.

If you need to have any lab tests or surgery done (dental cases included), do not forget to give your dentist or your doctor a background of the medicines and supplements that you are taking. In fact, keep a list of everything you’re taking, especially if you have allergies to some medicines or drugs so that (God forbid!) in case of any emergency and you are admitted to a hospital, you have something to show your doctors.

For every problem, there is a solution. However, adhering to all of the procedures and medicine mentioned above may not be a good solution for some women. This is the reason why it is still best to consult with your doctor (for conventional treatments) or a naturopathic doctor, so that you can come up with a treatment plan that would be right for you. Only then can you make an informed, knowledgeable decision which will give you less of a worry.
