Perimenopause Bleeding and Pain After Sex - Normal Signs Of Perimenopause?
Perimenopause is a crazy time in a woman’s life. So many changes take place and almost every new (and not so new) aches and pains can be attributed to hormones gone haywire. It’s easy to get complacent and blame everything on perimenopause.
It is scary to think that some of the symptoms that we attribute to perimenopause may actually be caused by something else. And yet, it is something that happens all the time.
One of the most common signs of perimenopause is irregular or abnormal bleeding. The irregularity stems from the fact that for periods to regularly take place, our hormones need to be released in the specific quantities required to regulate ovulation. During perimenopause, the levels of estrogen that our ovaries produce decrease and fluctuate, and this messes up our once predictable menstrual cycles.
As a result of these hormone fluctuations, we sometimes experience skipped periods. This can raise alarm bells in sexually active women. It certainly can signal a pregnancy, so don’t skip on birth control just yet and take a pregnancy test just to be sure.
In some cases the reverse becomes true - our periods come on much sooner. The quantity and quality of our menses may also change. You may notice that your periods are heavier, or that there are clots. Some women report having episodes of spotting in between periods.
Pain during sexual intercourse is also a common consequence of the vaginal dryness caused by perimenopause. In many women, this is also the reason for a loss of interest in sex.
While in most cases, perimenopause bleeding is simply a normal consequence of perimenopause, any changes in our menstrual patterns should still warrant a visit to a doctor. This is because there are several other medical condition that can produce the same symptoms.
10 signs that you should never ignore or take for granted include:
- Bleeding after intercourse
- Pain during and after intercourse
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Vaginal discharge that emit a foul smell
- Pelvic pain
- Heavy bleeding that requires a change of pad every hour
- Heavy bleeding that lasts for more than 5 days
- Painful cramping during periods
- Pain when urinating
- Spotting in between periods
These signs, together with irregular periods may also point to either an infection, a benign growth or a tumor within the pelvic area. Fortunately, many of these are easily treated when detected early enough, which makes it even more important that you don’t ignore these signs and report them to your doctor.
