Perimenopause – Natural Foods to Eat and Avoid
The end of perimenopause is the start of menopause – so it is safe to say that perimenopause is an inevitable stage of life that we women must face eventually. So instead of us complaining about the symptoms we are experiencing – irregular menstrual periods, weight gain (specifically in the midsection), night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia, etc. – we should be focusing more on the management and relief of the discomforts and pains because of the symptoms. Since you are reading this, you are off to a good start in being informed of what will be.
A change in diet can be of great help to the perimenopausal woman. Sometimes, the simplest adjustment in what we eat can work wonders in symptomal management.
So for starters, here’s a list of what not to eat, as too much of something can be bad for anyone’s health. Do not eat the following:
- An all-meat diet, specifically too much beef.
- Avoid frying. Frying causes the fat or oil to be absorbed by the meat.
- Avoid baking with cream-based sauces.
- Avoid too much sugar.
- Avoid too much salt.
- Avoid too much dairy products – regular whole or fresh milk included.
- Avoid caffeine products.
- Avoid drinking alcohol (or if you can’t completely eliminate it, then lessen it).
You should eat healthy, balanced meals. Consider the following as part of your staple food:
- Fish.
- Olive oil or corn oil.
- Fruits.
- Vegetables.
- Fiber – whole grain breads, oatmeal, rice, muesli, wheat bran, etc.
- Meat that is steamed, grilled, broiled, poached, and/or baked.
- Soy products – tofu, tempeh, miso, soy milk, etc.
- Flax seed or flax seed oil.
- Honey.
- Nuts.
- Garlic.
- Lamb.
- Liver.
- Skinless chicken (the leanest part – chicken breast – is always the best part).
- Complex carbohydrates – whole wheat, rye, etc.
- Water – lots of it.
- Low-fat dairy products – yogurt, skimmed milk, cheese, etc.
