Perimenopause Signs – Mood Swings and Irritability
Do you always feel that the world is against you? That everyone’s mission in life is to just get you so pissed – your boss, your husband, your kids … and even your neighbor’s dog? Do you feel happy at one minute, sad in another? Chances are, you are experiencing the early signs of perimenopause. Mood swings are obvious signs of the change and progression of age.
No, no, don’t get angry at me too. I’m just pointing out the obvious – all of us are getting older by the minute. Let’s admit it (even if I sometimes don’t want to), aging is a normal phase of life. We may grow wiser with age, but our body is not actually immune to it – no amount of wisdom will ever point us to the legendary fountain of youth to keep our bodies as young as when we were 20.
Our irritability spells and mood swings are, believe it or not, normal when we are in perimenopause. As with all symptoms, this is primarily caused by hormonal changes within our bodies, an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone production just when our body usually needs it.
But our loss of emotional control can’t always be blamed on an expected hormone imbalance. Big changes in a normal environment causes stress – transferring to a new office, relating with a new boss, relocating to a different house, a death in the family, a falling-out with your best friend, and a recent divorce may be possible factors in adding stress in your life.
Also, having less than a good night’s sleep also contributes to anger bursts and irritation-episodes. A regular person needs at least 8 hours of sleep. If you were used to that sleeping schedule and there are sudden changes to it (read: sleeping less than 8 hours a day), your body sends you signals that it needs more rest. Sometimes, even the slightest noise irritates you to no end – just because you didn’t get enough sleep.
Sadly, there is no known medicine that treats mood disorders. If it affects you that much, you can see your doctor and he may be able to prescribe some antidepressants for you. It is recommended though, that you try dealing with it first on your end. How? Well, changing to a healthier lifestyle would be a good start. Try having a well-balanced diet, with a steady intake of leafy green vegetables, fruits, a good mix of proteins and supplements for better absorption of the nutrients in the food you eat. Have a regular intake of flax seed, soy and vitamin E as it is reported to help relieve perimenopausal discomforts.
If you’re a smoker, then stop it as it just contributes to destroying your body more effectively by rendering most of your vital organs useless through constant use. (I smoked for 10 years before I stopped, so trust me, quitting is one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life and saved what I still can of my breathing organs.) Also limit your alcohol intake. And live healthy. Doing so may be able to give you a longer, healthier, and mood swing-free life.
