Seemingly Age-Related Perimenopause Symptoms (Libido Problems & Other Overlooked, Less-Common Symptoms continued)
- Osteoporosis (due to loss of bone density). This is usually diagnosed way past the perimenopause phase. But osteoporosis starts from perimenopause and if untreated will go full-blown once menopause is reached.
Bones are left unprotected due to the hormone imbalance between estrogen and progesterone. This is also the reason why perimenopause experts say that if you are now in this phase, then you should start taking calcium and bone density supplements to strengthen whatever is left. Remember, it is never too late to start taking care of your health, especially when your bones are concerned.
- Nausea. Perimenopause is often mistaken for pregnancy due to a similarity in symptoms, nausea being one of them. Again, this is more likely due to hormonal imbalance. However, if you suddenly rise from a lying position, then you may experience a slight dizziness which may also lead you to feel like you want to throw up – and that can be experienced by anyone. That goes for smelling something foul when you already have a slight fever. (Sensitivity to smell is enhanced when virus attacks the body.) So try to analyze if your nausea is related to perimenopause or just due to something else.
- Changes in fingernail tenacity. Brittleness and weakened nails are possible symptoms of a hormone imbalance but it also may be due to a poor diet. Silica and iodine deficiency are common causes of hair loss.
- Aching joints and muscles. If you are already experiencing arthritic or rheumatic pain and you’re not even in perimenopause yet, then you are a likely candidate for this symptom when it’s your time. Osteoarthritis (the bone’s cartilages break down, causing the bones to rub against each other which causes pain and difficulty in movement) is also a possibility as age progresses.
- Acne. A very minute group of women experience acne at this phase. And for those who have it, it may trigger depression. This is due to a deficiency in androgens (a male sex hormone which we women also have) which produces sebum and is responsible for the sloughing off of dead skin cells. Too much sebum become trapped in the unexfoliated dead cells, and becomes the dreaded face problem we know as acne.
The deficiency in androgens occurs as a result of hormone imbalance which really affects the entire system, leading to a mature woman’s acne nightmare. But, food is usually a main contributor too. Oily and fatty foods tend to be absorbed more by the skin. Combine this and the sebum you produce, and you will most likely have acne in your later years.
If you noticed, all of the perimenopause symptoms are usually inter-connected. One symptom usually leads to or triggers another symptom, with everything pointing to a single traitor: hormonal imbalance. In the next article, we delve deeper into the heart of perimenopause as we discuss the medical tests designed to help identify and confirm it.
