Early Perimenopause

Perhaps you have been reading about perimenopause and all of its symptoms. Maybe these symptoms sound like some of the symptoms you've been having recently, but based on your research, you're too young for this stage of life. You know that perimenopause usually hits women in their mid-forties up to the early-fifties, so how can you be going through perimenopause now?

What is Early Perimenopause?

The truth is that there is such a thing as early perimenopause. This is when menopause hits a woman who is in her mid-thirties to early-forties. Most women cannot believe that it is happening to them, and their first thought usually jumps to having children. Perhaps they wanted more children, perhaps they haven't started yet.

When it comes to the subject of having children, don't worry. Just because you are in early perimenopause doesn't mean you can no longer have children. It just means that your body is already preparing itself to go into menopause, which can lessen your chances of becoming pregnant, but it doesn't remove the possibility completely.

What is more important for you to worry about is yourself. Remember that it can take a while to become fully menopausal (which is why you can still have children.) You have to think about yourself because early perimenopause usually means your body will go through perimenopause for a long time. This means you have to educate yourself quickly on what symptoms you have, what other symptoms may be coming, and what you can do to manage the various discomforts these symptoms will bring.

First symptom of early perimenopause

Your first sign that you are entering early perimenopause is your first menstrual problem or your first irregularity in your period. Being irregular doesn't mean skipping a period of menstruation. It can be characterized by any of the following:

  • a fluctuation of the intervals of the menstrual cycle (your non-bleeding days)

  • unusually light flow on one month then a very heavy flow the next month

  • skipping a period

Sometimes these symptoms are not noticed, however because some women are taking low-dose contraceptive pills.

The next sign to be wary of is emotional distress or a sudden anxiety attack. This can come from nowhere and really surprise you. Sometimes it is coupled with heart palpitations, or may be triggered by memory changes, both of which are also symptoms of early perimenopause. However, these are often disregarded as “something weird” that happened and is ignored. This willingness to ignore symptoms could be the reason why women do not know they are in early perimenopause and are taken aback when perimenopause (more of its symptoms) finally hit.

Can early perimenopause be triggered?

There are some things that can trigger early menopause. Examples of these triggers are:

  • constant high stress levels

  • having had an unhealthy lifestyle for a period longer than ten years

  • irregular eating patterns during your twenties and early thirties

  • insufficient consumption of healthy foods

  • underlying health problems

What can be done about early perimenopause?

The best thing you can do for yourself is learn about what will be happening to your body physically and what symptoms to expect. Most women are taken by surprise at how complex perimenopause is, and so it is best for you to read about it and learn different techniques to manage your symptoms because if you have early perimenopause, you have a very long road ahead.
