Often Overlooked Signs of Perimenopause

Perimenopausal bleeding, irregular menstrual periods, hot flashes, insomnia, night sweats, midsection weight gain and mood swings are the usual symptoms of perimenopause. But did you know that there are other “minor” signs that are often overlooked?

Here are some signs of perimenopause that we often ignore:

  • Thinning hair.

Your beautiful, thick mane is slowly thinning. You see evidence of it in your pillow when you wake up in the morning, or as you shower and wash your hair. Unfortunately, declining levels of estrogen and excessive levels of testosterone can cause thinning hair or worse, androgenic alopecia (commonly known as female baldness).

Thyroid conditions affect hormones as well, so it’s best that you take advice and consult an endocrinologist for a series of blood tests, just to be sure that you don’t have any other medical condition.

  • Vaginal dryness and irritation.

Still a result of your diminishing level of estrogen, the vaginal walls lose lubrication and elasticity, leaving it drier and thinner than ever before. Because of that, intercourse becomes more painful, sometimes even bloody because of a dry friction.

To relieve this, try using a vaginal lubricant and/or moisturizer for the dryness and irritation and the pain during sex

  • Memory lapses and other cognitive function problems.

True, not all lapses and short term memory can be blamed on perimenopause. But again, a low level of estrogen affects certain brain functions, specifically moods, language and memory.

Before you declare though that it’s just a phase of perimenopause or Alzheimer’s, make sure that you eliminate other possible suspects like excessive alcohol drinking, stress from work or changes taking place in your life, taking anti-depressants or sleeping pills.

  • Breast tenderness.

This is not an alien symptom as we’ve all had it at one point or another – specifically when we have our monthly periods. Still, this is almost always attributed to the hormone imbalance of perimenopause.

  • Tinnitus.

A constant ringing in the ears, or a whooshing or buzzing. There is no known medical link as to why it sometimes happens to women experiencing perimenopause symptoms. It could also be associated with some health conditions such as heart disease and thyroid problems (specifically hypothyroidism), so don’t jump to conclusions. If you’re also taking medications, aspirin or Prozac, then it’s possible that it’s a side effect.

There are other symptoms that at first glance, may seem to be unrelated to perimenopause. But when your hormones go haywire, its effect on your body is so far reaching that you can consider every discomfort you feel as related to it.
