Palpitations – Perimenopause Symptom Or Not?

You’re at that age where you feel that any perimenopause symptom can hit at any time. You see some of the symptoms as we speak – an irregular and erratic menstrual cycle, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, weight gain (by the abdominal area), hair loss, mood swings, vaginal dryness and irritation, etc.  But you’re palpitating as well and more than anything else, this concerns you.

Is palpitations part of the minor perimenopause symptoms?

Every so often, a palpitation is a product of stress, hot flushes and vascular instability. It feels like a pulse that makes you think that your heart has a life of its own. Palpitations (or cardiac arrhythmia) are sometimes a result of a female hormone imbalance (one the doctor rules out any other underlying disease). This could also be caused by your hormone replacement therapy (HRT) treatment as a possible side effect is having heart skips.

Medical experts now say that if you don’t experience any flushes or even night sweats at all, then it may be the time to go visit your doctor or medical provider as that is the only relation it will have with perimenopause.

Should your doctor clear you of any other medical conditions, you should also do your part in trying to do away with it. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as these are major contributors in the occurrence of hot flashes and night sweats which, as we mentioned earlier, are the only direct relations to palpitations and perimenopause. Diet pills can also be a possible factor in cardiac arrhythmia, so get rid of them when you’re in perimenopause.

If you are doing regular exercise when a palpitation comes up, it means your body is exerting more effort than usual – which shouldn’t be, even if it is exercise. If you are jogging, gradually stop jogging and try to get a few minutes of rest. It’s best to lie down and breathe through your nose then breathe out through your mouth. 5 minutes is best at minimum to stabilize your heart’s condition.

Also, try doing relaxation and meditation exercises. This will be extremely helpful in relieving some of the stresses in your life that may be causing your heart to beat too fast. Yes, stress can contribute to a palpitating heart, so try to relax and put aside your stressful worries, at least for a time.

The best thing to ask your doctor? Know what your normal heart rate is. Also, if you don’t know how to yet, try to ask your doctor how to best take a pulse. This is so that you don’t worry too much when a palpitation drops by to visit. Of course, when you feel some chest tightness, or even dizziness with your heart palpitation, then it’s pretty obvious that it is time to go to a hospital or (if you feel you can’t drive) call an ambulance.

There is no need to be ashamed of perimenopause, much less heart palpitations as a symptom. It is a normal phase of life that every woman must go through. What matters is that you should be prepared for any eventuality – know the facts. Knowledge of the symptoms and the management of it will help in giving you an experience of perimenopause as an active and happy phase of your life.
