Perimenopause – Age Gracefully with the Change

As much as we don’t want to admit it, we are growing old by the day. Upon experiencing certain changes, you can be sure that it is just around the corner, patiently waiting for its time to go full-blast on its offense. And when the perimenopause signs and symptoms start to show, your body will not just feel it, but you’ll also be able to see outward effects of the transition.

So really, the phase and age that matters most to women isn’t menarche (the start of the menstrual period) or menopause (the end of the menstrual cycle) – it is the transitional stage in between that makes a difference. It may even surprise you to know that the beginning and the end of the menses is just for a day. But you don’t know when perimenopause will strike and it may last for months, years even.

The usual signs and symptoms may or may not be felt by the woman of age – irregular menstrual periods and bleeding inconsistencies, night sweats, abrupt mood changes, weight gain (specifically around the abdomen and midsection), and hot flashes are the most common and most complained about symptoms. Other overlooked signs may be the following: Hair loss (or in contrast, the increase of facial hair), short-term memory lapses, heart palpitations, vaginal dryness and loss of libido, temporary insomnia (which usually goes away once you reach menopause), dizziness or nausea, tingling in the extremities, urinary tract problems, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), or gum swelling are just among others that may or may not have been linked to perimenopause yet.

Not all women experience the said symptoms. But all of that is mostly linked to one cause – a female hormone imbalance, specifically that which concerns estrogen, the woman’s hormone that controls certain brain functions and primarily the menstrual cycle (leading to its irregularity in frequency and blood flow).

Take heart, though. If you do get to experience them, you just need to do a couple of things first:

  • Go see your doctor or health care provider. I know that some of us are afraid of doctors (uh, did I just say us?). Let him run some tests on you just to eliminate the possibility of you having some illness. (I know I have, even though I am yes, scared of doctors.) There is no one test to fully determine if you are already in perimenopause. Trust your doctor on this one.

  • Once it has been established that you don’t have a serious medical condition, then medication management of the symptoms can then be discussed and given. Unfortunately, there is no one drug that can eliminate or lessen the pain and/or discomfort of the symptoms. You and your doctor can take about how to deal with it and compromise on medication or possible treatments you can take.

  • If you smoke, then quit it. Smoking gives you the possibility of having perimenopause a few years earlier than you’re supposed to. Plus, need I say that it’s bad for your health? (Take it from an ex-smoker.)

  • Make adjustments to your diet. Go with something healthier. Sometimes, there are some foods that trigger some of the symptoms. This would depend as no woman is created alike. Monitor the food that you’re eating and make note of the things you have reactions to. Avoid foods that are too salty as this will make you feel bloated all the time. Go with leafy green vegetables and fruits since you can never go wrong with them.

  • Exercise regularly. Some perimenopausal women decide that they would just take it easy since they aren’t feeling too well. While that is true on most occasions, chances are, the reason you are always tired is because you don’t use much of your energy so it’s not replenished. A walk on the block would do wonders, not only on your body because of the healthy blood circulation, but on your moods as well. You feel energized, hence, you feel happy.

Perimenopause isn’t such a bad thing once you know how to manage it. Remember: it doesn’t matter how old you are; it’s just a number. What matters is how young and vibrant you feel. The little lifestyle changes you make will make you feel wonderful and new.
