Perimenopause – Natural Treatment for Your Symptoms

Perimenopause is something that every woman will go through – no woman is exempt from it. You may experience a lot of the symptoms, and how you go through them may or may not affect your quality of life. These changes are brought about by a woman’s hormonal imbalance. Treatment for the symptoms may be classified into three types:

  • Conventional treatments (the ones commonly recommended by your doctor, and are backed up by clinical trials and testing);

  • Alternative prescription medication (medicine used as a substitute to conventional means; cannot be bought without a prescription from the doctor because these medications are usually recommended for a different type of medical problem), and;

  • Alternative natural treatments (also known as complementary and alternative medicine, it may or may not be backed up by official trials, but is effective as evidenced by the testimony of perimenopausal women all around the globe.)

This article talks about the third type of treatment.

Alternative treatments date back to more than centuries of tried-and-tested use. The Chinese, in particular, have been put on a pedestal for their massive contributions to health and well-being via their medicinal herbs and tonics. And in numerous studies conducted, Asian women are shown to have a higher tolerance to perimenopausal pain due to a higher intake of soy – considered to be one of the pillars of alternative treatments.

If you are reading this, then you are probably wondering if there is one particular home remedy you can take to manage all your symptoms. Sad to say, there is no “miracle” herb that you can use to eliminate all discomforts due to perimenopause.

However, there are some herbs that target not just one, but two or more symptoms.

Black cohosh (also known as Bugwort, American Baneberry, Squawroot, Rattleweed and Black Snakeroot) is considered to be one of the most powerful herbs women can utilize for pain and discomfort management.

Known as “the woman’s herb”, most of its medicinal properties lean towards a woman’s well-being. It has relaxant properties that affect uterine movement, eventually decreasing heavy menstrual bleeding. It can also be used as a pain-reliever due to an irregular period.

Also known to lessen the occurrence of hot flashes, it also helps in the relief of discomforts due to vaginal dryness and the lingering feeling of being bloated. Headache relief is also an added bonus, plus a decreased chance of experiencing heart palpitations.

Care must be made in its use though. Black cohosh is only recommended for short term use as there are no conclusive studies and findings when used over the long-term.

Another wonder herb is the ginseng, specifically Panax ginseng. Brain activity is given a gentle push by this herb, as it helps increase brain activity, lessening instances of short-term memory loss. This herb is also used for the relief of hot flushes and fatigue. Again, ginseng should only be used for treatment over a period of not more than 6 months.

Flaxseed stimulates estrogen. Since perimenopause is due to a hormone imbalance, this (particularly its oil) is an effective means of taking care of some perimenopause symptoms such as vaginal dryness and irritation, and the management of excessive bleeding from an irregular menstrual period.

As with other herbs, flaxseed should not be taken with other herbs such as gingko, red clover, ginseng and garlic to avoid any adverse reaction. If you are taking anti-platelet or anti-coagulant medicine, do not take this as well.

Herbs are not magic. They give relief to symptoms, but that doesn’t make them cures to preempt modern science, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition. It is advised that you discuss these options with your doctor before taking any of the remedies prescribed here.
