No one likes feeling nauseous, the queasy feeling that makes you feel sick at the thought of food or a type of food, that makes your stomach turn when you see something unappealing, and that makes you more sensitive to strong odors.
During perimenopause, nausea can occur, but it can be very different from any kind of nausea you've experienced before. While some women have it only from time to time, other women go through days or weeks of nausea. They feel like they have constant morning sickness, and their stomachs are too sensitive to eat more than just one type of food. Naturally, this is a problem.
Some bouts of perimenopause nausea are accompanied by headaches and sensitivity to light and noise. Others occur simultaneously with diarrhea, constipation, or indigestion. As a result and like many of the perimenopause symptoms, perimenopause nausea can leave a woman incapable of daily functioning. Either it is due to the accompanying symptoms just mentioned or perhaps it is because movement will make her even more nauseous or because her body is left weak by a lack of food (usually nauseous women can barely eat.)
Doctors are still unsure as to what causes perimenopause nausea. While they blame hormone imbalances for the problem, the specific imbalance that leads to this symptom is not yet known. Some are led to believe that the symptom is actually just a side effect of other symptoms, or a result of extreme stress.
If you have perimenopause nausea (remember to rule out pregnancy first), there is little that can be done except to find ways to cope with the symptom. Some women report that their nausea is accompanied by acid reflux and gas pains, and so antacids and an increase in water intake tend to help them deal with the nausea. Other women report that they are only nauseous when sitting or standing upright, and so lying down can help them deal with the feeling while it passes. For some women, soda crackers and soft drinks help settle their stomachs. Unfortunately, this could also be because it is the only thing their body CAN stomach!
You can also try eating more fruit and staying away from greasy foods. Many women become nauseous at the thought of greasy or oily foods, and so sticking to non-oily or natural food like fruit can help them cope with the symptoms and get some needed nutrition. Also try drinking herbal teas, like peppermint tea, which is known to be a good calming tea for those suffering from nausea.
When experiencing perimenopause nausea, you may find that your nausea lasts only for a few minutes or a few hours, or maybe it lasts a few days. It can also happen everyday at a certain time of day, or occur every other day, or happen only when something triggers the nausea. Different coping techniques work for different women, and you will have to find one that works for you.
